Events

The Wieken holds six main events a year, usually coinciding with traditional Dutch festivities. Click here to view the dates of upcoming events.

Members regularly get together to play Klaverjassen, a popular Dutch card game.

In the spring we celebrate the Queen’s birthday (30 April), together with Memorial Day (4-5 May) at our annual membership meeting.

In the Fall we commemorate Leidens ontzet, the liberation of the city of Leiden from Spanish rule, in 1572, which initiated the move towards independence under William the Silent, (the founder of the nation and grandfather of William III, who became king of England).

During the Summer, we arrange for a family outing. Another popular summer event is the Indonesian potluck dinner (rijsttafel), which features the cuisine of the former Dutch East Indies, a welcome deviation from routine Dutch cooking.

In April or October, the club participates in the Raleigh International Festival by displaying our cultural heritage and by offering selected Dutch culinary creations.

In December, we celebrate Sinterklaas (not to be confused with Santa Claus), when the old Saint stops in Raleigh on his way to Holland, to bring presents to local Dutch-American children.

In mid winter we gather for an old-fashioned Stamppot dinner meeting. Whenever possible, get togethers are at members’ homes, thus providing a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere.

At monthly koffieklets gatherings the club offers opportunities to practice conversational Dutch and exchange Dutch news, books and magazines.

The club has a support program for members experiencing illness or hardships. Some of the club’s proceeds from local functions serve the disadvantaged in the Raleigh community.
